Evening Bell at Miidera Temple, from the series Eight Views of Ōmi (Ōmi hakkei)

Utagawa Hiroshige

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

A Japanese woodblock print depicts a landscape with a body of water. The water is blue and white on the left, bordered by a sandy beach area with trees. A steeply sloped hill rises on the right, with trees and a reddish-brown path leading up it. Two mountain peaks are in the background, on the left. The sky is pinkish orange on top and fades to white near the mountains. There are several Japanese characters written in black ink, with four red seals on the top left. A vertical red banner with Japanese characters is on the top right. The image has a thin black border and a thick tan border around it.
