Water Scene

Utagawa Kuniyoshi

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a Japanese woodblock print titled "Water Scene" by Utagawa Kuniyoshi. The scene shows a woman sitting on a boat, wearing a striped kimono with red lining and a patterned skirt. She sits with her back to the viewer, wearing a black hairpiece on her head and holding a long wooden pole. The boat has a light-colored hull with a dark stripe along the bottom and small rectangular holes along the side. Two small tables with round objects on them sit to her right. In the background, two people row small boats on the water, and a large body of water stretches out with trees and a dock on the left side. The sky is blue with white clouds. Japanese characters are written in black ink on the top left and in a red rectangle on the top right.
