Noboto at Shimōsa (Shimōsa Noboto), from the series One Thousand Pictures of the Sea (Chie no umi)

Katsushika Hokusai

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

A colorful Japanese woodblock print depicting a beach scene. A large body of water fills most of the image. Blue water extends from the bottom to the top, with a distant shore on the horizon. A small orange boat with a white sail is on the right side. The shore in the foreground is brown with a narrow strip of blue water. Many people dressed in colorful outfits, mostly blue and yellow, are on the beach, some standing and some bending over. A green hill rises on the left, covered in green and yellow, with trees on the top. A few buildings with dark roofs are on the shore across the water. The print has a blue border with a brown checkered pattern on top and bottom. A vertical white oval with red Japanese characters is on the upper left, and a small vertical line of Japanese characters is on the lower right.
