The Monkey Bridge in Kai Province (Kōyō Saruhashi no zu)

Utagawa Hiroshige

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Vertical woodblock print with a brown wooden frame. A river runs through a steep, rocky gorge. The river curves to the right in the center and turns to flow toward the bottom of the image. White wave crests line the edge of the river as it cascades through the gorge. A wooden bridge crosses over the top of the gorge. There are trees on the cliffs on both sides and on the bridge. A yellow-roofed building sits on the bridge. The background shows other mountains in a blue sky with a full moon. Mountains are reflected in the calm surface of the river on the left. There are Japanese characters on the right side.
