Utagawa Kunisada

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a print of a woman sitting on the floor by Utagawa Kunisada. The woman wears a purple kimono with a patterned under-kimono visible at the sleeves and neckline. The kimono has a wide, flowing sleeve and a sash at the waist. Her hair is styled in a traditional Japanese updo adorned with decorative pins. She sits on a patterned floor cushion with one leg tucked under the other. Her right elbow rests on her knee and her hand on her face. She sits in front of a green window with shoji screens and a beige wall. A red box with a circular hole in one side sits in front of her. Japanese characters appear on the wall and near the bottom of the image. The background behind the woman is a room interior with tatami flooring. The woman's attire and setting suggest a traditional Japanese interior.
