Tortoiseshell and Basketry Inrō

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Rectangular object with rounded corners and a handle at the top, made of woven material, possibly leather or basketry. The object has a repeating pattern of interwoven strips in shades of dark brown and black. There are five horizontal rows of woven strips, with each row featuring a similar pattern. The edges of the object are trimmed with a thin white cord. Small black beads are spaced along the sides of the object. The object appears to be a type of inrō, a traditional Japanese container. It is shown from two slightly different angles. The background is a solid brown color. Tortoiseshell and Basketry Inrō, by an unknown artist.
