Case (Inrō) with Portrait of Daruma (obverse); Large Lotus Leaf and Stalk with Seed Pod (reverse). The artifact is composed of two adjoining, cylindrical cases of wood. The obverse depicts a bust-length portrait of a man, Daruma, in an orange robe and hat. Daruma appears to have a dark complexion, fierce eyes and a scowling expression. The reverse shows a large lotus leaf with a stylized seed pod extending upwards. The wood grain is distinctly vertical on both the obverse and reverse sides.
