Case (Inrō) with Design of Chinese Sages Seated on Verandah

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Rectangular case with rounded corners, made of lacquer, featuring a design of Chinese sages seated on a verandah. The case has a dark brown background with gold accents. A figure of a sage in a robe sitting cross-legged on the verandah is visible on the front. The top of the case has a small, raised section with a loop of braided cord attached, through which a small, bronze or copper-colored finial in the form of a sage sitting on a cloth is threaded. The sage on the finial wears a robe and has one hand resting on their knee. The background of the image is plain and light-colored.
