Netsuke of Pleasure Boat (Takarabune)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Netsuke of Pleasure Boat (Takarabune) by unknown artist is a small, dark brown sculpture with golden undertones. The object depicts a boat with a flat bottom and curved sides. The boat's body features an etched design along its side. A fish-like tail protrudes from the back-right side of the boat. A pole rises from the center of the boat with a ball at the top. Three people are on the boat: one sitting at the back and two in the middle. The person to the left holds a large fan. The person to their right plays a stringed instrument. Openings are carved through the sculpture on either side of these musicians. The background of the image is light grey. A shadow is cast to the right of the sculpture.
