Netsuke of Noh Mask: Ōni

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Brown wooden carving of a demon mask with a large nose and protruding mouth, almond-shaped eyes and eyebrows that curve down. The mask has a shiny surface with darker areas indicating shadows. Two small ears protrude from the top of the mask. The mask appears to be a netsuke, a type of toggle used in traditional Japanese clothing. The mask represents Ōni, a type of demon or ogre from Japanese folklore.
