Netsuke of Dog and Puppy

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

A carved Netsuke of Dog and Puppy, made from a light-colored material, possibly ivory or bone. The dog is sitting on its haunches, facing right and angled slightly toward the camera. Its head is lowered, with its nose touching the paw of a smaller dog lying on the ground beside it. The larger dog has a smooth body with dark brown markings. The smaller dog is mostly obscured, but appears to be lying on its side with its legs tucked under its body. The background is a solid gray color.
