Netsuke of Daikoku and Mallet on Coin

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a bronze Netsuke of Daikoku and Mallet on Coin. Daikoku is crouched down on his haunches, his right leg tucked under his body. He wears a traditional Japanese head covering and a short-sleeved top. The figure's facial features include a flat nose and a short beard. Daikoku's right hand rests on a large coin; his left hand grips a mallet handle that rises behind him. The mallet head is not visible. In front of Daikoku are two small objects: one spherical with a patterned surface and the other round and flat. The base of the sculpture is circular and flat. The entire sculpture has a dark brown patina. The background is light gray.
