Roundel with Karma Lineage

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Roundel with Karma Lineage by Unknown. A carved, tan-colored, oval-shaped pendant or medallion with a prominent central figure. The central figure sits cross-legged on a platform with hands clasped together in prayer or meditation, wearing a crown. This figure is surrounded by a series of smaller, similar figures, also in meditation or prayer, arranged in multiple levels around the central figure. Some of these smaller figures sit on platforms or thrones; others appear to be in trees or on rocks. The background of the roundel is intricately carved with foliage and architectural elements. The roundel appears to be made of a smooth, possibly ivory material.
