Niche with the Seated Bodhisattva Shakyamuni Flanked by Devotees and an Elephant

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

A stone carving depicts a seated male figure wearing a crown and draped cloth across his lap and around his right shoulder. His right hand rests on his knee and his left hand rests on his lap. He sits cross-legged on a platform with a man kneeling to his right and another figure to his left. The male figure and the left figure both wear crowns. An elephant's head protrudes from the left side. A rounded archway frames the top of the carving. The archway top features carved leaves and a decorative border encircles the frame. The carving presents a light beige color with darker areas indicating wear. The background wall behind the carving is plain and light grey.
