Twenty Tirthankaras: Folio from a Kalpasutra Manuscript

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Rectangular artwork with a red border around the edge. Inside the red border is a blue background with a tan, red and white design. The blue area takes up most of the artwork and is divided into five sections by four horizontal white lines. Each of the five sections contains four figures. The figures are identical and depicted in a seated position with their legs crossed. They have brown skin and hair, and are adorned with tan and red clothing and jewelry. The background of each section has red and white designs. The red designs resemble a flame or a teardrop shape. The white designs are small rectangles with a row of circles along the top and bottom edge. The white lines separating the sections also have a row of circles along the top and bottom edge. The artwork appears to be an illustration from a manuscript, specifically a folio from a Kalpasutra manuscript, titled "Twenty Tirthankaras".
