The Thames Towards Erith

James McNeill Whistler

National Gallery of Art

The image depicts a view from a slightly elevated position overlooking a body of water. The horizon line is marked by ships and masts in the upper third of the composition. The sky above shows cloud-like forms. Small boats with figures on them are seen near the viewer. In the distance, there are sailing vessels on the water leading to larger, docked ships. On the right side, there is a structure by the water, possibly a boathouse. Linear strokes are used to depict texture and movement in the water and sky. The image is monochrome, focusing on light and shadow created by the pencil or etching technique.
