Spiegel Menslicher Behaltnis: The Virgin Mary Overcoming a Devil

Cleveland Museum of Art

The Virgin Mary stands in a red dress and a halo, holding a large wooden cross. She has one hand on the cross and the other on the ground. A devil or demon lies on the ground at her feet. The devil has horns and is dark-colored. The scene is framed by a red border. To the left of Mary is a white column with a snake wrapped around it. There are various objects on the ground and on the wall behind her, including a broom, a bundle of sticks, a sword, a dagger, a green wreath and three dice. Mary's head is covered. The background of the image is an off-white color. The image appears to be a medieval-style illustration.
