Overdoor Painting

Pierre Rousseau

Cleveland Museum of Art

Overdoor Painting by Pierre Rousseau: The relief sculpture depicts a procession of eight figures against an orange background. The scene features a woman in a reclining position with her right leg bent and left leg extended, sitting in a chariot with one wheel. She wears a flowing dress and holds a wreath in her right hand. Two cherubs pull the chariot, one on each side. To her left stands a woman wearing a long dress and a floral crown on her head, with her right hand raised to her head and her left hand on her hip. On her right side, a naked winged man runs. The woman in the chariot and the cherubs and figures to her right are sculpted in white. The woman on the far left and the cherubs and women on the right are sculpted to appear as if they are made of white marble. Their facial features are detailed, with the figures appearing to move in a line. The background has diagonal streaks.
