Overdoor Painting

Pierre Rousseau

Cleveland Museum of Art

The "Overdoor Painting" by Pierre Rousseau features a relief sculpture. The relief is long and rectangular. The background is orange-beige with visible darker streaks. There are eight human figures and two animals carved in white. The leftmost human figure is a shirtless, muscular man with short hair. He holds a cloth around his waist and reaches towards a pedestal. To his right, there are three women in long dresses with their hair up; the first woman on the left holds an object to her face; the second woman holds flowers above her head; and the third woman stands behind the second. The fourth figure from the left is a child holding objects. The fifth figure from the left sits on a chariot; the chariot is pulled by two oxen led by a child. The man in the chariot holds an object and has short hair. The sixth figure from the left stands and holds her headgear; the seventh figure from the left sits on the chariot and is partially covered; the rightmost figure is a woman in a long dress with her hair up, holding a basket of flowers on her head with one arm. The two animals are a goat on the far left and two oxen in the center. The goat faces left and rears up; the oxen face left and pull the chariot. The relief has a flat base at the bottom.
