Miniature Excised from a Manuscript: St. Jerome in the Wilderness

Cleveland Museum of Art

Miniature excised from a manuscript: St. Jerome in the Wilderness by Albrecht Dürer. The image shows a framed illustration of a man sitting on the ground in a desert landscape. The man is wearing a black robe and a yellow halo, with a bare torso showing blood on his chest. He has a long white beard and is holding a crucifix in his right hand. His left hand is on his chest. There are two books on the ground next to him, one red and one blue. Behind him to the right is a lion with a long mane. The lion's mouth is open, and its tongue is out. The man appears to be looking up. The background shows a body of water, a mountain range, and a blue sky with white clouds. The frame around the illustration has green marble columns with gold capitals. The frame is surrounded by an ornate border with green, blue, red, and white swirling patterns. The border includes depictions of human figures.
