The Gotha Missal: Fol. 64r, Christ in Majesty

Master of the Boqueteaux

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image shows an illuminated manuscript page with a central figure of a man sitting on a throne, likely Christ, with a halo around his head. He wears a long robe and holds a book and a sceptre; the figure sits on a patterned throne against a gold background. He is surrounded by a four-lobed design with blue and gold patterns. Four creatures are at the corners of the design: an eagle and an angel at the top, and a lion and a bull at the bottom. The central design is bordered by a red frame with swirling white patterns, and this is surrounded by a larger gold frame with a leaf pattern. The whole image is set within a border of a vine with leaves; a cross is at the bottom. The corners of the page have gold squares with ornate patterns. The page number 64 is in the top right corner. The background of the page is off-white and yellowed with age.
