Leaf from the Hours of Duke Louis of Savoy: Saints Nereus and Achilleus

A medieval-style painting depicting the lives of Saints Nereus and Achilleus. The painting is arched at the top and divided into sections. The central section shows two men in armor with halos. The man on the left wears red and holds a spear. The man on the right wears black. They stand on either side of a green Gothic archway. The archway has a woman in a long dress standing inside. Six smaller scenes are arranged around the central archway. Top left: A man in white with a cross on his chest and a bishop's mitre on his head holds a staff and gestures. He stands on a checkered floor with two men in armor and a white dog. Top right: A group of people stand around a box in a landscape. Bottom left: A group of people stand around another man on one knee. Bottom center left and right are not visible. Bottom right: A group of people on horseback and on foot near a building. The entire painting has a gold border. The background of the image the painting is on is beige. The painting style and subject matter are characteristic of the work of the Limbourg brothers.
