Leaf from a Book of Hours: The Annunciation (recto)

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image shows a medieval-style illustration of a scene from a Book of Hours, specifically The Annunciation. The central scene depicts two women in a room: one woman, the Virgin Mary, sits at a red desk with an open book, wearing a blue cloak over a white dress; another woman, the angel Gabriel, stands before her wearing a long brown dress. The angel has wings and a halo. The room has a pink wall and a window showing a green landscape. The illustration is surrounded by a border with green vines and leaves, and several small figures of people in various poses, including some in prayer. The border figures wear medieval-style clothing in shades of blue, red, pink, green, and yellow. The overall color palette is muted, with earth tones and faded colors. The illustration is framed by a gold border around the arch and blue on the inside of the arch. The image is on a beige background.
