Group of the Dublin Situlae

Cleveland Museum of Art

A large, black ceramic vessel with a wide mouth and a narrow base. The vessel is decorated with images in a light brown color. The vessel has two small handles on either side. A Greek key pattern is on the top and bottom. On one side, a man on a winged horse with a spear thrusts at a lion-like creature with a snake's tail and a goat's head. The creature has wings. A man on a horse with a spear appears to be attacking the creature from the right. A woman stands to the left. On the other side, a man wearing a theatrical mask and carrying a thyrsus and a kantharos stands among four women; one woman is on the ground and another woman's head is obscured. A small Eros flies above the man.
