Krishna and Balarama Taking the Cattle Out to Graze, from a Bhagavata Purana

Cleveland Museum of Art

The painting depicts a scene with several figures and animals. Two shirtless men wearing red head coverings and shorts are herding cattle out of a building. One man holds a stick and guides a white cow, a pink cow, and a gray cow. Another man carries a blue cloth and wears a crown-like headpiece and pink shorts. A gray-skinned figure with a blue face and four arms stands beside him, wearing a red and yellow garment. In the background, a man in a similar outfit to the herders tends to two cows inside the building. Three women stand in a doorway to the right, one holding a plate of food, another holding a stick, and a younger girl behind them. The building has a brown roof and white walls. A green awning is over the doorway. Outside, there is a grassy hill with trees and a blue sky. The cows are various shades of white, pink, and gray.
