Leaf from a Commission: St. Mark Giving the Keys of Venice to Francesco de Priuli

Benedetto Bordone

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image depicts a medieval-style illuminated manuscript page. The main scene shows two men in a room with a view of the sea. The man on the left sits on a box and wears a red shirt and blue pants. He holds out a set of keys to the man on the right, who wears a purple robe. The room has a tiled floor and a window with three columns on the right side. A blue border surrounds the page, adorned with gold floral patterns and three circular illustrations. The top circle features a lion on a red and green background. The bottom circle displays a shield with a cherub on either side. The right circle shows a man in a brown robe. A large block of red and gold text is below the main scene. The text is written in a language that appears to be Latin. The background of the page is off-white.
