Egypt and Nubia, Volume I: Temple at Esneh

Louis Haghe

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image shows a grayscale illustration of a large ancient temple interior. The room has a high ceiling and is supported by several large columns with intricate carvings and ornate capitals resembling flower or mushroom shapes. The columns are thick and have vertical grooves. They are arranged in two rows. The floor is flat and made of stone. Several people are sitting or standing on the floor, wearing long robes and head coverings. One person lies on the ground to the left. A staircase with several steps leads up to a higher level on the left side. The walls and columns have hieroglyphics. The overall atmosphere suggests a place of historical or religious significance. The title "TEMPLE AT ESNEH" appears at the bottom.
