Drawing of the Crucifixion

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The artwork depicts a crucifixion scene titled 'Drawing of the Crucifixion' by Albrecht Dürer. The rectangular drawing has a border made of small, multicolored squares and half circles. Inside the border are two semicircles resembling suns or shields in the top corners. Two flower-like designs are on either side, near the top. The central image shows Jesus Christ on the cross, with his arms stretched out and nailed to it. He is wearing a loincloth. Two figures on either side of Jesus are on a lower platform; one on the left holds a spear, and one on the right holds a sponge on a stick. The two people on the far left and right are dressed similarly in brown clothing and yellow leggings. The background of the upper section contains illegible writing in a foreign language. The bottom section features several stylized flowers and leaves. The crucifixion scene is from the year 1500. The artwork depicts a significant Christian event. The entire image is bordered by a thin green line.
