Mantel with Wellford Ornament from Beltzhoover House, Carlisle, Pennsylvania

Robert Wellford

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image shows a mantel with a flat top and a rectangular opening. The mantel has a light-colored stone or marble appearance. There are two columns on either side of the opening, each with a decorative base and a fluted shaft. The columns are attached to the mantel and extend from the floor to the top of the mantel. On either side of the columns, near the top, are carved figures in arched recesses. Above the opening, the mantel has a wide, flat section with a central panel featuring a carved urn. The panel on either side of the urn features hanging vines or plants. The top of the mantel has a beaded edge. There are two small white labels, one on either side of the mantel near the floor. The background is a plain wall with a darker color at the top and a lighter color at the bottom. The floor appears to be made of concrete or stone.
