Gold-colored medal with a circular shape. The medal has a raised edge with small circles around the perimeter. The top of the medal has text in a curved line that reads "OF THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES MARCH 3 1867". Underneath is a shield with vertical stripes on the left and a map of the United States on the right. Under the shield and map are the words "TO CYRUS W FIELD OF NEW YORK". The next line reads "FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE RENDERING TO THE COUNTRY". Below that are the words "IN ESTABLISHING TELEGRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS BY MEANS OF THE ATLANTIC TELEGRAPH". The bottom of the medal shows a globe with a laurel branch on the left and a palm branch on the right. Under the globe are the words "CONNECTING THE OLD WITH THE NEW WORLD". The background of the image is gray with a shadow cast by the medal.
