Man Smoking (from Sketchbook)

James McNeill Whistler

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image shows a collection of five sketches on a gray background. A large sketch of a man in a long dark robe holding a smoking pipe is on the left. The man has dark hair and a mustache. He is standing and looking to his right. To the right and above him is a smaller sketch of a man with curly hair wearing a jacket and pants, with his right arm extended to the side. Below this is a sketch of a man in a top hat and coat smoking a pipe. He is standing with his left arm bent at the elbow and his right hand near his face. At the top left is a small oval sketch of a man's head and shoulders. At the bottom left is a small sketch of a man in a hat pointing to the right. The background of the image is a gray piece of paper with some darker spots and a black border. The sketches appear to be done in black ink or charcoal.
