The fabric features several rows of embroidered text and designs. The top row features the alphabet in uppercase letters in black, brown and blue thread. The second row features the alphabet in lowercase letters, also in black, brown and blue thread. Below the alphabet, a decorative row of blue and brown shapes. Another row of text follows with a poem stitched in black thread. The poem reads: "Excel and emulate thy Parents Plaise Let thy intrinsic worth the tribute pay In every useful art thy time employ Zealous to gain esteem true heat felt Joy" Below the poem, a row of text reads: "This is Miss Jane Simontons work aged 14 years" The year "1809" stitched to the left of the decorative design and the silhouette of a bird. The sampler has a simple, homemade appearance.
