Continental footed porcelain cup, Virginia

Joseph S. Potter

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The cup is white porcelain with a wide mouth that tapers down to a narrow base. A gold rim borders the top. Below the rim are two horizontal blue stripes with a white stripe between them. A large oval gold-framed medallion on the front displays a person on a rock holding a flag and spear with a dead lion below. The person wears a grey shirt and red shorts. A banner on the flag reads "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS". The frame has ornate gold scrollwork. A blue stripe with two thin black stripes borders the bottom of the medallion. The base and stem are gold.
