Mask

Myōchin Muneakata

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Dark brown mask with a wide face and a prominent forehead, featuring two wavy lines that converge in the middle. The eyebrows are carved in a curved shape, resembling waves or swirls. The eyes are circular holes. The nose is bulbous and protruding. The mouth is open, revealing upper and lower teeth, and the lips are curled upwards, giving the impression of a snarl or a scream. There are two small holes on either side of the mask near the ears. The mask appears to be made of wood or a similar material and has a smooth, weathered finish. Mask by Myōchin Muneakata.
