Mask in the Shape of a Mountain Demon's Face

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The mask depicts a mountain demon's face. The mask is made of dark-colored material, roughly rectangular with rounded corners and straight across the top. A groove indents the top center, spanning the width of the mask. Curved lines on the upper half resemble a brow. Two holes are cut out for the eyes. A short curved nose protrudes downward from between the eyes. The mouth curls into a wide, thin-lipped smile. Two small tabs extend from the mask on either side. Small holes line the bottom edge. The background of the image is white. The title of the mask is "Mask in the Shape of a Mountain Demon's Face", by the artist, Tokugawa.
