Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The tsuba has a brown patina and a textured surface. The guard is irregularly shaped with a wavy edge. There are three holes: a triangular hole in the center; an oval hole to the right; and a pointed-oval hole to the left. The left hole contains a relief sculpture of a horse. The horse has a long mane and tail. The background behind the tsuba is plain white.
