Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The sword guard, or tsuba, is a dark brown, metal object with a four-lobed shape. The lobes are rounded and the object has a flat, smooth edge. The center of the tsuba features a design cut out in a floral motif, but not clearly defined into specific flowers. The design has a central elongated oval shape flanked by curved lines. There are six small cloud or flower shapes cut out around the center design. The background behind the tsuba is light gray.
