Pair of Sword-Grip Ornaments (Menuki)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Gold pair of sword-grip ornaments, menuki. Two identical figures, each depicting a man in traditional clothing and a headpiece, crouching with one leg bent in front of the other, and holding a long object, possibly a gun or spear, in both hands. The object has a long cylindrical part and a wide, decorated end resembling a feather or leaves. The figures are positioned on either side of an imaginary central line, one above the other, against a plain gray background.
