Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Sword Guard (Tsuba) is a circular, dark brown metal piece with a scalloped edge. The guard has a central oval-shaped opening with rounded ends and a narrow, elongated rectangle in the middle. Two oval-shaped openings are on either side of the central rectangle. The guard features an intricate design comprising multiple concentric circles of small, irregularly shaped cutouts. The cutouts are roughly heart-shaped and vary in size, with the smallest near the center and the largest at the outer edge. The metal has a worn appearance with visible signs of aging and rust spots, particularly around the central rectangle. The background of the image is light gray.
