Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The tsuba, a component of a Japanese sword guard, is circular and made of metal. Its surface exhibits a dark brown patina with areas of orange rust. A scrolled edge encircles the tsuba. Two large oval-shaped openings flank a central teardrop-shaped void. Surrounding these openings is a pattern of repeated teardrop-shaped cut-outs arranged in concentric circles.
