Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The sword guard, or Tsuba, by an unknown artist, is circular and made of dark brown metal with visible signs of aging and wear. The metal surface is slightly pitted. The guard has three distinct cut-out sections: one long, narrow vertical slit in the center and two oval-shaped openings on either side. The right lower section features an embossed design resembling a figure or object. The background of the image is plain light grey.
