Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The tsuba, created by an artist from the Gassan school or a similar tradition, is a circular sword guard. The dark brown tsuba features an oval-shaped hole on the left and a teardrop-shaped hole in the center. The right side displays two circular designs. The top circle contains a dot and resembles a bird. The bottom circle features an object that could be a branch or a plant. A rectangular design with a central stem and four protrusions, possibly representing a plant, is at the bottom. Small gold inlays adorn various parts of the tsuba. The background of the image is white.
