Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

This tsuba by Unno Kuniyoshi is a circular, flat piece of metal; it appears to be made of iron. The object features a large, triangular cutout in the center and a smaller, irregularly shaped cutout to the left. A small indentation can be seen to the bottom right. The surface is discolored with dark brown and black spots and patches; two small gold lines cross in the bottom right depression. A few characters are stamped into the metal. The background is plain white.
