Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The tsuba sword guard features a circular shape with a dark brown color and a decorative design. The guard has three cutouts in the center: one long, narrow vertical cutout flanked by two oval-shaped cutouts on either side. The surface of the guard is adorned with an intricate design featuring birds, possibly cranes or ducks, surrounded by swirling wave-like patterns. The background of the image is plain white. The tsuba appears to be made of metal, likely iron or steel, and exhibits signs of aging and wear.
