Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Sword Guard (Tsuba) by an unknown artist. This is a bronze tsuba with a rounded shape and wavy edges. The tsuba has two oval-shaped holes for the sword blade, one larger than the other. The larger hole is on the right and is teardrop shaped. There are green and gold inlaid designs on the left side. The inlaid designs are shaped like a stem with two leaves at the top and a curved shape at the bottom. There are etched designs on the tsuba including curvy lines and a cluster of grapes on the bottom right. The background of the tsuba has an etched texture. The tsuba has a brown patina with some green and gold visible.
