Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The tsuba is round and made of dark brown metal. The metal has a darker patina around the edges than in the center. A hole on the left side appears rounded on top and straight on the bottom. A more narrow slit cuts vertically through the center. Gold and black designs adorn the lower and right sides. The designs are of a bird with gold and black feathers on the bottom, facing right. Gold and black plants are on either side of the bird. Above the bird on the bottom right, there are gold and black flowers on the right side. The background is plain gray.
