Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The tsuba is circular and made of dark metal, likely iron or steel with a textured surface. The surface appears worn and weathered, with a brown patina. A large oval-shaped hole cut through the center has two oval protrusions on either side. Gold inlays depict various designs, including a fan with a handle on the bottom right. The background of the tsuba features swirling patterns and other gold inlays.
