Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Sword Guard (Tsuba) has a rounded rectangular shape with curved edges. The sword guard is dark brown with a rusted appearance and small spots of discoloration. There are two oval-shaped holes side by side in the center, the left one solid and the right one irregular. The bottom of the sword guard features a relief design of a crab facing right with long legs, with some inlaid with gold. The crab and relief design are light brown with gold accents. The background of the image is plain and light gray. The artist, in this case, is not visually identifiable from the image.
