Pair of Thigh Defenses (Cuisses) with knee defenses (Poleyns)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Two metal thigh defenses, also known as cuisses, are shown side by side. They are made of metal and have a ribbed, elongated oval shape. The cuisses are oriented with the wider end at the top, tapering to a narrower end at the bottom. Each piece has a strap or band around the middle. Attached to the bottom of each piece are knee defenses, also known as poleyns, which are shaped like a rounded triangle with the base of the triangle attached to the cuisse. The metal has visible signs of wear and aging, with dark spots and discoloration throughout. The background is a plain wall with a lighter-colored floor.
