Shaffron (Horse's Head Defense)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Shaffron (Horse's Head Defense) by an unknown artist is a metallic horse head armor. The piece is shaped like a horse's head with a wide top and a narrower bottom. It consists of several curved, ribbed metal plates riveted together. Two protruding, curved pieces form the ears at the top. The eye and cheek areas are protected by curved cutouts on either side. A decorative plate in the center features a cluster of spherical shapes. The entire piece is adorned with rivets along the edges and on the surface. The metal has a weathered appearance with visible spots and marks. The background of the image is plain and light-colored.
